Plant Based Recipes: Hazelnut Milk

I love to try new and interesting recipes as much as I can, and use them in my daily life. The cook book that I am using is called “Oh She Glows Everyday”, which is a new and innovative way of cooking. All the recipes are plant based, and vegetarian, including some gluten free, and vegan foods. I really enjoy trying out new recipes, that I can replace with other foods, which is why I chose to make hazelnut milk. “Decadent, luxurious, and totally splurge-worthy” (Liddon, 35) is how Angela describes her creamy hazelnut milk, worthy of a coffee shop.

The first recipe I made is called “Coffee shop worthy hazelnut milk”, and the first thing you must do is crack all the hazelnuts and almonds out of their shells. This takes a lot of time and practice, but you soon get the hang of it with a little bit of patience. After all the nuts are out of their shells, comes the hard part. Waiting. The nuts must then be soaked for 8 to 12 hours in water, to soften them. It is ideal to soak them overnight, so they will be ready when you wake up! They need to be soaked so that they will blend easily with the other ingredients

Now that the nuts are prepared and ready to be blended, you can add them to a blender with water, medjool dates, vanilla extract, and cinnamon. All the other ingredients help enhance the flavor of the hazelnut milk and give it some extra sweetness. Medjool dates are known to have a sweet caramel taste, which helps naturally sweeten the milk. After blending for one minute, the mixture will need to be drained in a nut milk bag, to remove all the pulp. You can place your bag over a bowl and pour in the mixture, allowing it to strain into the bowl. After most of it is strained out, squeeze it with your hands to get the rest of the milk out.

Then you are done! You can transfer it to whatever container you would like and it is ready to drink! I really enjoyed making his recipe because it allowed me to try something I have never done before, and inspired me to keep trying unique recipes like this. Would you ever like to try out this recipe, and why?

  2. The hazelnut milk was actually fairly easy to make, it was the preparation that took a lot of time and patience, such as cracking them all out of their shells. However the flavor of the milk is a very unique taste and adds some flavor to whatever you are making. It tastes like cinnamon with a very nutty taste!
