Doughnuts - A Chocolate Glaze

Along with my basic sugar glaze, I also decided to make a chocolate glaze. It is a very common glaze that is on many doughnuts. When I read the recipe, I noticed that it was very short and simple like the glaze recipe. It contained only 4 ingredients and it had 1 step like the basic glaze recipe.

Ingredients:
11/2 cups of confectioner's sugar
4 tablespoons of cocoa powder
2 tablespoons of milk or water (I used milk)
2 teaspoons of vanilla

I used this type of cocoa powder but it was very bitter.

Steps:
1. Stir together the sugar and cocoa powder in a medium bowl. Slowly stir in the milk and vanilla, a little at a time, to make a smooth, pourable glaze.

So at first, I saw the easy recipe and I thought it would be easy to make. The first batch of chocolate glaze that I made ended up tasting really bitter, almost like a coffee. It was also very thick and not pourable like the recipe said. I made a second batch and it became more smooth, but it still had the coffee taste. The bitter taste might have been because of the unsweetened cocoa powder. I decided to just keep it and put it on the doughnuts and it applied nicely and looked good. It tasted okay when it was on the doughnut.

Have you guys ever tried to make something and it didn't come out how you wanted it to?

  1. I like how you were being honest with the way the glaze turned out. I've had experiences with food not coming out the way I wanted to in the past. For example cooking something really simple like pasta and adding too much salt. I think part of the reason the glaze did not turn out so well is because of the unsweetened powder.

    1. Hi Diana. Thanks for reading my blog post. I agree, it was probably the cocoa powder. I have so many experiences with failed cooking as well and even my mom who's been cooking for a long time sometimes accidentally adds too much salt to her pasta.

  2. I like how descriptive you were in this, I could picture vividly what you were describing. Also, I feel as though everything I have ever tried to cook or make has come out a disaster the first time.

  3. This was very descriptive and gave step by step details about how the glaze turned out. I feel like many of the things that I have tired to make did not always turn out as I wanted, but they continued to get better as I kept trying to improve.

    1. Hi! Thanks for reading my blog post. I was disappointed that it didn't turn out the way I wanted it to. I agree that with practice you get better at making things so I will definitely keep trying to make doughnuts and hopefully they will come out right.

  4. Good post Zainab! If you made this again, would you do anything different? You said the glaze was sort of bitter so would you add more sugar? or maybe less cocoa powder?

    1. Hi Makiya! Thanks for reading my blog post. Yes, if I made this again I would probably try to add more sugar so it can balance out the bitterness. I feel like I would also try using less cocoa powder to see which idea works better.
