The Better the Shot the Better the Team

5..4..3..2...1! *The horn goes off* The game is over. You won by one off of a lucky half court shot. This is a good shot but only for score and time reasons. Good shots depend on the situation you are in and how open you are. I am going to tell you the difference between a bad and a good shot.

You may be open but is your teammate wide open? Making the extra pass will not only get your teammate an open shot but it will make you look unselfish and like a team player. A team that shares the ball is a great team that is more likely to win the game. In the book, "Stuff Good Players Shpuld Know" by Dick Devenzio it says ,"Why not wait for a better shot?'
"To some players, even good ones, these kind of questions often sound ridiculous, and yet winning teams are most often the teams who pass up shots like these and wait for better ones." (pg. 35)

We can all agree that a lay up is an easier shot then a 3 pointer. If you are on the three point line semi open and your teammate is under the basket semi open, which is the easier shot and who is more likely to make it? The type of player and their positioning towards the hoop can sometimes affect why you don't make the extra pass. For example, if you had NBA star LeBron James at the three point line and the worse basketball player in the world at the block. Who are you more likely to pass to?

As a point guard it is your jo to get your teammates open and easy shots. For anyone playing basketball getting your teammates involved is important.

Assist are a big part of stats. Coaches that are recruiting pay close attention to the amount of assist a point guard gets a game. An assist is a stat saying that you passed the ball of for someone else to score. Some of the best players in the NBA average double digit assist a game. Which is very hard.

After learning how important assist are as a guard and how much it gets your team involved and makes you a team player i have tried my hardest to average 4-8 assist a game. My highest amount of assist in my time of playing basketball is 10 assist in a game. Which is pretty good for my age.

Now back to good shots. In my last game, my teammate made the extra pass to me so I could shoot and make a wide open three, to where the defense didn't even have enough time to recover and get a hand up to contest my shot.
Above is a picture of me getting ready to shoot. My defender is far enough for me to take and make an uncontested shot.
Image result for wide open shots
See how number 7 is more open then all his teammates and is ready to receive the ball for his teammate driving to the basket.
